Online Horse Racing: Betting On the 2011 Breeders’ Cup

Only the strong will survive in the $500,000 Breeders Cup Marathon at the demanding distance of a mile and three quarters so online horse betting fans must seek and find runners that can stay the course.

This will be the 4th running of this race and it has been run according to form for the most part so far. The first running was taken by Muhannak when he paid $12.40. In 2009 Man of Iron proved just that paying just 2-1 and last year Eldaafer made it three straight as he came at 4-1 from 4th while posting a 95 Beyer.

This year, online horse racing players know contenders abound and the candidates will likely grow as times goes on.

If last year’s Marathon hero is going to repeat he will need to turn it around. He was out of the money in the Grade 1 United Nations July 1 and will need things to unfold just right.

Setsuko may line up for this race but the feeling is he is overrated. His trainer Richard Mandella did something a few years ago that may never happen again and that is win four BC races on one day. He has always been high on this horse and he has run some good races but just doesn’t seem to have that killer instinct.

Trainer Bill Mott has a pair that may aim for the Marathon. They are Birdrun, second in the Greenwood Cup Stakes at Philly in mid-July and Drosselmeyer, who will need to pick it up after running 7th in the Grade 1 Sword Dancer at Saratoga.

The foil to Birdrun in Philly was A. U. Miner. This guy could be a very tough cookie if he comes back in the Marathon. Forced to steady in last year’s running of the Marathon, he has been lightly managed this year but the way he has drawn off at a mile and a half suggests he will adore the Marathon distance. He’s won at Churchill, has a nice turn of late foot and with a legit pace, he’ll be a major factor.

Afleet Again will be worth a glance at a price. He has had a rough go of it this year, but was on the wrong surface in his August debut when placed on grass. This runner chased some top sophomores last year and he is another that if he gets some help on the front end, could pick up some serous pieces late.

Veteran Bourbon Bay is in the world-class hands of Neil Drysdale and is sharp right now as he was second in the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap.

Those who enjoy betting on horses will remember he was beaten in that race by Celtic New Year and that guy will be a factor if he suits up for the Marathon.

The runner has been turf only so he will have to prove he can handle the main track but he ran huge in April when beaten just a half-length at the Marathon distance in the San Juan Capistrano. He is trained by John Sadler, and that guy has made few mistakes the last few years.

Surprise, Todd Pletcher has a legit contender in this race is Alma d’Oro. The runner cashed cleverly in the Carpenter Memorial at Delaware in July and he has a penchant for finding the wire. He has won 6 of his last 18 races and has won nearly $300,000 in the last two years.
