The season finale of HBO’s “Hard Knocks” – probably the best show on television – is this week and should get that much more interesting with the news that the Jets and star cornerback Darrelle Revis have finally agreed to a contract.
Revis, considered the NFL’s best cornerback, hasn’t been at camp or played in any preseason games but certainly will start in Week 1 when the Jets host the Ravens on “Monday Night Football” and New York Jets is a 2.5-point favorite. Revis was looking for $16 million per season – or slightly more than Raiders star cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha but got a four-year, $46 million deal with $32 million in guarantees. Previously the Jets had offered $12 million per year on a 10-year deal and $10 million per year on a four-year deal. Under his old contract, Revis was due to make $21 million over the next three years. After a holdout that resulted in $578,305 in fines, Revis secured $11 million in additional guarantees while committing an extra year to the team. Apparently coach Rex Ryan and team owner Woody Johnson visiting Revis in South Florida over the weekend got the deal done.
That Revis signed makes that Ravens game even more intriguing as he no doubt will be lined up on new Baltimore receiver Anquan Boldin. Revis was not at practice Monday but was expected to be in uniform Tuesday. Antonio Cromartie – the team's top cornerback in Revis' absence — will go back to playing on the right side of the field, while first-round pick Kyle Wilson now is the nickel cornerback. Revis was targeted on 96 passes year, the fifth most of any corner in the league. Yet no wideout he played had even a 50-yard game.
This news means New England Patriots guard Logan Mankins is the highest-profile holdout remaining in the NFL. Mankins has said he won’t play until he becomes the highest-paid guard in the league.
